Kurznachricht

- 3. FESTIVAL OF BLUEGRASS AND AMERICANA MUSIC" steht vor der Tür.

New Banjo Post at last

Controversy arouse about a PBS movie about the banjo and it's history. Hartmut from Hannover now sent me this link to the movie . I didn't watch it jet, but I surely will.

"...on the rocky road to Dublin one two three four five ..."

The immortal Luke Kelly sang this song (among others). Now it's the name of a cake: Rocky Road. Sic transit gloria mundi.

Jigs and Reels

The Cobblestone Pub in Smithfield has American Oldtimemusic sessions every Saturday. Alan and me were there on Thursday (we'll have our own Oldtime Jam on Saturday in our hotel). On any other day there's Irish session in the Cobblestone. This evening there were lots of very young people playing as if they had never done anything else in their lives. Great unforgettable evening!

"The Queen of Tarts", Edward Str., Dublin

No, this blog is NOT about eating and calories, it's a banjo blog. But "...the queen of hearts still making tarts and I not making hay..." (from "Raglan Road")

Alan found the perfect hotel for the Dublin Jam. And this is their Irish Breakfast, yum,yum

Banjo only played by men? No way: (Thanks Chris)

Anticipation

Sitting by the fireside and reading the Dublin guide. Weatherforecast is not pleasant, but anyway it's Dublin. Didn't expect sunny blue sky in November. Surely want to visit the National Museum-Archeology (they seem to have several NM). Rain outside will not be a big issue inside. And considering the melancholic mood of P. Kavanagh's poem "Raglan Road" it cannot be wrong to see that road through wet glasses. Of course I'll take my banjo with me to the Dublin Jam . And the ukulele, which is small enough to be put into the suitcase. Not sure if I should take the guitar too - or the cello banjo? Or none of the two? Sigh......

Dublin

It's less than to weeks. On Oct. 11th the Dublin Jam (formerly known as Dublin Retreat) will start. I am sure that there are spare rooms for the late. Up to now we are 14 guys gals. Come on, we are a friendly bunch. Alan will be happy to get your email.

Video?

Unfortunately editing the rempetiko video turns out to be more diffizile than expected. I recorded a mov-file which has to be transformed before being uploaded to YouTube. I am looking for a program to do this.

No Banjo

During this years holidays in Paleochora, Crete, I refrained from taking the banjo with me. Hate the extra fee for heavy luggage. Instead I took the Ukelele to practice some of the chords I will need in Dublin . And there is a great advantage to the Uke: It´s quiet. But as in most of the other years, I witnessed the highlight of Paleochoran holidays in October: Rempetiko concert of the band ANDROMEDA in the vegetarian restaurant THIRD EYE. Vegetarian food may not be typically greek, but ANDROMEDA´s music really is. I will upload one or two videos as soon as possible. Unfortunately I didn't record the awful voice of the woman who is a member of the band since years and really can drive you to tears through her singing - like the old rembetes could. For further reverence try to watch the movie "Rembetiko" by Costas Ferris. Hopefully I can cover that woman´s singing next year in Paleochora.

Bert Jansch R.I.P.

... but his music will live forever.

Konzert

Daily Frail RIP?

Looks like Patrick's Daily Frail has come to it's end. Although reading his newest post at Tangier Sound makes me sad, I know that I am lucky that he was my teacher and still is through his way of looking on music. I wouldn't love the banjo the way I do without knowing him.

4 Wheels

Obviously there is more than one way to drive four wheels. Look here for the real thing .

Termine, Termine

"The Avett Brothers Tiny Desk Concert for NPR Music" auf YouTube ansehen!

The Darlings

Bild
Unfortunatly I only had my mobile with me to catch the awful performance of these four girls from Winipeg. Sound quality is really poor, but nonetheless the video should give you an impression of the band. Watch the terrific bass playing by Marie-Josée Dandeneau and of course the marvellous clawhammer by Allison de Groot (especially from 2:20 min on in the video while playing duet with fiddling Rosalyn Dennett). The voice of Vanessa Kuzina made it all perfect.

Ashokan Farewell

Während ich nach dem Text und den Akkorden für "Going to the Races" gesucht habe (Version von den The Crooked Jades ist excellent), stieß ich auf die Gitarrentabulatur für Ashokan Farewell Anscheind ist es in D geschrieben und hat eine recht einfache, aber auch mal eine besondere chord progression (weiß jemand was "unusual vi - V7 progression, instead of the usual ii - V7" genau bedeutet?) This could help for the Winterhude Stringband, oder, Uwe?

Darlings

They blew the Old Trainstation pretty much away. Gonna play their newly released CD all day long. More later.

Abfahrt Kiel 18:00 h? Maile, wer mitwill!

Practice

Bild
After the eagle had passed and I had enjoyed my croissant (or two) I thought: "What is an eagle without banjo." I took the banjo mute (for not to annoy the neighbours) and did some 3/4 and dropthumb practice. If it´s a known tune, it wasn´t planned. Just what came into my mind, reflecting the mood in the garden.

Home Is Where the Eagle Flies

Bild
Sitting int he garden having breakfast between flowers and shrubs my eyes suddenly spotted the eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) doing his circles across the blue sky. That was when the above headline came into my mind. Could become the title of a song. Probably is already? John Denver? Anyway the image from Wikipedia perfectly shows what I just saw - except the smaller bird (Red Milan) was not there. Not yet.

Rixdorf Revisited

Bild
Hier sind noch ein paar Videos vom 1. Mai in Rixdorf: I Feel Free Proud Mary Und hier die Hamburger Pipes and Drums, verständlicherweise ohne Banjo - gegen den Lärm käme nicht mal Earl Scruggs an :)

Winterhude String Band

Willie Nelson

Not sure if there's any banjo on these tracks, but Willie's always worth listening, even without the Queen of Strings ; ) Country Throwdown Tour 2011 Itunes needed for free download :( PS Not only Itunes needed but US-citizenship (or at least domicile in America). Itunes doesn´t allow downloading these files to non Americans. Freedom of the internet, where art thou ... :(

Don´t Fret

Bild
There were beautiful banjos at the Banjoree´s showroom. Among them a fretless OME minstrel banjo. Immediatly I fell in love with it. So sad we had to part. You can watch (and hear only insufficiently) this darling on the following video. I know, I know, it is strongly advised that you don´t slide every note on a fretless but only some special notes - only beginners would slide every note as often as possible. I couldnt´t resist anyway. Guckstu hier:

Banjoree 2011

Vielleicht in Kiel? Oder im Wendland ? Mal sehen...

Banjoree

Bild
Viel Spaß, viel Musik, viel zu üben...

Morgen...

See you.

Bald...

Banjo Mute

Bild
As the next Banjoree in Hagen is coming (in fact it´s next weekend) I thought that practising a few tunes could be a good preparation. Was it by chance that I just now found this pic of the famous "Nine Pound Hammer" at Alans blog ? Hopefully nobody I know will get the idea...

Winterhude String Band

Mai, und  in Rixdorf is Musike: Foto-Reisebericht Reiseführer Reise-Info Gut Rixdorf Holsteinische Schweiz

Wedding?

In case the Westminster Abbey organ won´t work, the princely couple could ask Stephen for permission to use his music .

John Sebastian

No, not the Lovin´Spooful but JSBach always piqued my curiosity. There is a wonderful CD "American Bach" by Michael J. Miles (I may have mentioned this one before). And he tabbed down the Minuet from Anna Magdalena´s Notebook in the booklet which accompanied the "Counterpoint" CD (cf. my post from last year ). Unfortunatly he didn´t play it on the CD, just gave the tab. After a long time of practice this is what I achieved. There are some spots in it which drove me altogether mad, you surely will find them while listening to the mp3-file . As I remember from the past, this piece is played a lot faster on piano, but apart from I couldn´t do it faster - I like it slower (fox and grapes...).

Springtime

Bild
When Patrick showed us the Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica), I thought I´d give you an impression of Holsteiner Buschwindröschen (Anemona nemorosa):

No banjo...

... but cooool: The Black Atlantic from Netherlands: Why don´t they have a banjo with ´em?

Clawhammer Guitar

Ever heard of Steve Baughman? He is a very, very melodic guitar picker. Uses tunings like C-G-D-G-C-D, he calls it "Orkney-Tuning". As I find the "normal" guitar tuning sort of special enough for me and there´s work enough to get to know the fingerboard in normal tuning, I´m not going to risk a nervous breakdown with DADGAD or Orkney-Tuning - although hearing him kind of makes me anxious to play such pieces too... But what made him even more interesting for me was his "clawhammer guitar" style which he often uses with celtic tunes. I stumbled over this while browsing through the latest edition of the German magazine "Akustik Gitarre". They put a video clip with Steve Baughman on their website here . He shows his clawhammer technique from minute 3:38 onwards. As he tells on the clip, his guitar for this is tuned in D-A-D-G-B-D, very banjoesque. And it´s bump ditty! Should give it a try sometime.

Banjo-Science

Duelling, well, um, "banjos"

Joe from Pennsylvania (Hi, Joe, thank you very much!) sent me the following link to a very good guitar player - and his friend who is replacing the banjo. This left me speechless ... Clawhammer is crap! Unfortunatly I´ve got no informations about this guy.

BanjoOrchestra, RiP

We will play traditional oldtime banjo during our meetings in Hamburg-Winterhude, but here is how an Orchestra consisting of our beloved sweeties could have sounded like - after having practiced years and years and years, I´m afraid... New Criterion Banjo Orchestra More about this wonderfull orchestra at ncbo (Thanks to Martina for the information about this site) Hopefully we will hear similar sounds at the next Banjoree in Hagen as there will be a workshop on classic banjo.

String Music

Waltzing banjos

Patrick gave his disciples some homework and I thought I´d join the chorus. At first I tried to play the tune on my cello banjo. But it turned out (as often) that frailing chords doesn´t sound very good on the cello. It´s better to play more single notes than strums. So I recorded the tune on my Saga banjo and added the cello later. Hope you like it.

All of me

Yesterday I gave all that I had - to finger the chords of  "All Of Me". The Gettorf Jazzband met again. Every now and then I shoot the chords correctly and very now and then the brass guys found the right notes. So we had lots of fun again and will continue our efforts to play a tune the way it will be recognizable. As you may hear here it will be a long way ;-)))
