In 2016 I first learned a version of Sandy River Belle in a workshop led by Adam Hurt in Gainsborough. He prefered a special tuning: gEADE (which in fact is Sawmill tuning but the 5th string lowered one note). I liked it a lot but during the next years lost the idea of this tuning and usually played the tune in normal G. Now I came upon a tablature book by Kevin Neidig  which is all about banjo duets (also available on A.). It´s got 20 well known tunes in standard version and in harmony version: I´m pretty sure that Blacky and me will try some of these tunes during our upcoming banjo breakfasts. As Sandy River Belle is included in the book, I gave it a try with headphones and Audacity . Here it is: Sandy River Belle me and myself 

 Die bisher geplante Oldtime-Session im Kolonistenhof ist übrigens nur für Geimpfte oder Genesene offen. Auch wir wollen alles für eine Eindämmung der Pandemie tun. Da es sich um eine private Veranstaltung handelt, sind wir frei die Regeln festzusetzen.  Wir könnten natürlich auch festlegen, dass nur Banjos mit gefärbtem Fell zugelassen sind, aber soweit will ich dann doch nicht gehen 😉😉😉

 Nach langer Zeit haben sich endlich die Gray Rabbits wieder zusammengefunden. Wir hatten einen schönen Nachmittag auf dem Kolonistenhof. Der liegt ja recht mittig zwischen Kiel und Flensburg 😉. Dabei entstand die Idee,  dass wir auch eine mehr oder weniger regelmäßige  Oldtime-Session dort begründen könnten. Wir haben wegen des Super-Wetters natürlich im Freien gespielt. Aber es gibt dort einen Raum, den wir (jeweils nach Absprache mit den Betreibern des Kolonistenhofs) gegen einen kleinen Obolus ("Hut geht rum") nutzen könnten. Wer gerne eine Einladung zu so einer Session haben möchte ("reines Oldtime") möge mir schreiben.

Every now and then I read  Josh Turknett ´s newsletter, which comes into my inbox regularly. Lately I received some encouring news. I think it´s worth sharing here: " A secret that I think many aspiring banjo players would find surprising. A secret that I wish I'd known sooner. What's this secret, you ask? That  there is no connection between how hard a tune is to play and how good it sounds . Hard tunes don't sound better than easy ones. Easy tunes don't sound worse than hard ones. Whether it's playing at a show, for friends and family, or posting on YouTube, how much people like something I play has NOTHING at all to do with how hard it is for me to play it."

Rhiannon Giddens ist ja nicht nur durch ihr Banjo-Spiel bekannt. Deshalb weiss ich auch nicht, ob sie in Hamburg eines ihrer Banjos dabei hat. Das Konzert ist aber mit Sicherheit ein Erlebnis - für den, der sich trotz Corona in die Elbphilharmonie traut. Schon lange will ich Facebook den Rücken kehren - um nicht drastischer zu werden... WhatsApp habe ich jetzt grad gekündigt und nutze nur noch Signal .  The concert just ended on YouTube live but it will stay online one week from now. Allison de Groot, Tatiana Hargreaves (each of them accompanied by friends) and Bruce Molsky were digitally brought together by the Green Note, London.  They played amazingly as ever, very recommendable.  PS Bruce Molsky even played a fretless banjo with formica fingerboard.

  James Scott Skinner wrote this lament in 1903 as a tribute to Hector MacDonald, a Scottish Major-General who died through his own hands in India not long before. Although I wouldn´t  think of building a monument for an officer of the colonial era, I was really touched by this tune when I first heard it in Achnamara played on small-pipes. Skinner built a monument out of very few notes. So not long ago I gave it a try on banjo. And as I am the proud owner of a digital piano since three months and practiced a lot on the new instrument, I tried to play the tune on piano too. Please forgive some strange notes and extra breaks - I´m new to the piano. (And as Skinner wrote on his sheet music that the lament is to be played slow, I took full advantage of his order 😉) BTW, you can hear Skinner play his tune on this link from the University of Aberdeen.
