The oldtime banjo blog from Kiel

This blog may have been quiet for quite a while, but not so my banjo. During the summer every now an then I hit the strings to practice the tunes I love (e.g. Whiskey Before Breakfast or Blackberry Blossom, click here ). And now as autumn draws near it really is time to give a call again to the next Kiel jam, aka Flying Circus of European Frailers ;-) After Sheffield in 2008, Kiel in 2009, Newcastle in 2010 and Dublin in 2011 it´s Kiel again in 2012. From Friday Oct. 26th til Sunday Oct. 28th we will hit guitar, uke, mandolin, dobro, saw (!) and of course banjo and the old vocal cords in Kiel-Friedrichsort. We made a reservation for the same place as in 2009, so everything will be as last time: Accomodation is payed per capita (the more attend, the cheaper it will be). We will prepare our own food (Katrina/Martina and me will buy enough for all – drinks too) and everybody is invited to share his skills in the kitchen and to share the costs per capita. Yes, this is a new post on the old blog ;-) While strolling through the Michael J. Miles website  and looking for news about tabs for his JSBach-CD (couldn´t find any) I found this news about his European concerts: "Sept 20-23 Johnny Keenan Banjo Festival Tullamore, Ireland"                                                   and "Wednesday, Sept 26, 8:00pm "FROM SENEGAL TO SEEGER:        Stories of the American Banjo" Sage Gateshead in Sheffield, UK This is the UK debut of Miles' renowned one man show ,  " From Senegal to Seeger ."   If anybody around Tullamore and Sheffield is reading these lines: Don´t miss the master - and please tell me about it later on. Leider habe ich es zu Oh My Darling in Trittau nicht geschafft. Hoffentlich kann ich die zweite Chance nutzen. Sie kommen nämlich am 19.6.12 um 20:00 Uhr in den Knust in Hamburg . Dafür war ich aber auf dem Scheersberg ! Es war ein wunderschönes Wochenende mit viel Musik und sogar schönem Sommerwetter. Zum Glück konnte ich am Workshop "Ensemble" mit Tom Jolin teilnehmen. Wir waren über 15 Teilnehmer, ein bißchen viel, tat aber der Begeisterung keinen Abbruch. Es gab u.a. drei Bässe, eine Klarinette, einen Dudelsack, eine Blockflöte, eine Dobro, eine Nyckelharpa , vier Fiedeln, eine Gitarre und fünf Banjos (inc. Toms). Dementsprechend laut gings zu, was man hier auf Cluck Old Hen hören kann. Außerdem lernten wir noch Good Night Little Arlo (von Woodie Guthrie für seinen Sohn geschrieben), Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss, Golden Slippers (a Mummers Tune from Philadelphia , Patrick Costellos Freunde werden wissen, was das ist) und Boile That Cabbage Down. Die Superband aus Kanada ist wieder in Europa! Am 19.5.2012 spielt OH MY DARLING wieder in Trittau im Alten Bahnhof , wo sie letztes Jahr schon das Publikum begeisterten. Nix wie hin, Frailers!

Auf dem diesjährigen Folkies-Treffen auf dem Scheersberg ist amerikanische Oldtime Music das Thema. Auch Tom Jolin wird da sein und gibt einen workshop. Packt die Banjos ein und fahrt hin!

Das 12. Möllner Folksfest findet vom 1.-3. Juni 2012 statt. 2008 warn da schon mal die Barnstormers aus Pensylvania mit Tom Jolin, dieses Jahr wird er wieder kommen. Außerdem gibts in Mölln dann auch türkische Musik. Auch toll, ehrlich. Aber Tom Jolin und sein Oldtime Banjo ist natürlich ein Muss.

In Rixdorf bei Plön ist wieder Musike. Am 1. Mai wie jedes Jahr treffen sich dort die Folker. Ich habe keine website dafür gefunden, aber weils jedes Jahr so ist, MUSS es einfach dieses Jahr wieder sein. Letzes Mal warn da auch Banjos;-)
