The oldtime banjo blog from Kiel

We will play traditional oldtime banjo during our meetings in Hamburg-Winterhude, but here is how an Orchestra consisting of our beloved sweeties could have sounded like - after having practiced years and years and years, I´m afraid... Beim letzten Treffen des Banjoorchesters haben wir uns von der Orchesteridee verabschiedet. Vielleicht waren die Ziele doch etwas hoch gesteckt. (Obwohl: gerade habe ich mir die Bach-CD von Michael J. Miles schicken lassen: So glasklares Clawhammern ist schon beeindruckend. Das klingt so toll, dass der Gedanke "das will ich auch können " von ganz alleine kommt - der Weg ist das Ziel!) Wir werden uns jetzt (hoffentlich regelmäßig) weiter treffen, um Oldtime Stringband - Musik zu machen. Mehrere Banjos und vielleicht noch das eine oder andere Saiteninstrument? Mal sehen, wen wir noch dafür begeistern können. Unser nächstes Treffen ist für den 24.2. angedacht. Den bisher bekannten Interessenten werd ich noch was doodlen.

Patrick gave his disciples some homework and I thought I´d join the chorus. At first I tried to play the tune on my cello banjo. But it turned out (as often) that frailing chords doesn´t sound very good on the cello. It´s better to play more single notes than strums. So I recorded the tune on my Saga banjo and added the cello later. Hope you like it.

Yesterday I gave all that I had - to finger the chords of  "All Of Me". The Gettorf Jazzband met again. Every now and then I shoot the chords correctly and very now and then the brass guys found the right notes. So we had lots of fun again and will continue our efforts to play a tune the way it will be recognizable. As you may hear here it will be a long way ;-)))

Katrina (die mit dem Klarinetten-Kapo) hat herausgefunden, dass die Villa in Friedrichsort Ende Februar ein freies Wochenende hat, in das wir uns einbuchen könnten. Nun ist zwar der Winter evtl. im Februar noch nicht vorbei und ob sich bei der gegenwärtigen Schneeflocken-Phobie in Norddeutschland jemand auf die Räder nach Kiel macht, könnte fraglich sein. Aber: Wir könnten eine Art Zwischen-Retreat veranstalten. Eine Multi-Session mit integrierter Orchesterprobe, Impro-Einlagen und evtl. Dixie-Jazzeinlage? Dazu spielt der Kochklub auf Töpfen und Tellern? Habt Ihr Interesse? Vieleicht könnt Ihr, die Ihr Interesse habt, Euch mal ganz gegen unsere bisherige Gewohnheit schnell bei mir melden, damit ich bald abchecken kann, ob sich der Aufwand lohnt. Sonst ist das weekend weg. Zeiten und Dauer sowie die - geringen - Kosten kann ich erst ermitteln, wenn ich weiß, ob überhaupt jemand Lust hat. Frail on!  Die Villa

As a proud owner of a new Android smartphone I checked out  www.tunein.com . It´s amazing how many stations you can find with this app. There even is a button to search for special items. Of course I typed "banjo" and immediatly had lots of stations with banjo music. Wow! Now I need a special app to give me two more nerd-hours a day so I can use the smartphone appropriately.
