Twas an amazing journey through North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia (with a few days added in New York). We met great people, had inspiring sessions and saw stunning sceneries. Unforgettable. Flights are booked. On Friday 27th September I'll be flying to Charlotte NC and then hope to enjoy two weeks of Appalachian mountains and music. Driving along the "Crooked Road" and hopefully joining some jam sessions there will be fun and was a dream of mine since long.

Quite some time I was thinking  about putting a natural hide on my Karsten-Schnoor-Banjo  (which had a Renaissance head). Finally I managed to order a John Balch head (no pun intended). Changing the head was no big deal.  I put on the Super Nylgut strings from Aquila. Now the instrument is sounding mellower and I think I now got rid of  the piercing overtones which are so typical for many banjos. I now like my KS banjo  even more than before. You may compare the sounds here: Renaissance head, Nylgut strings John Balch head, Nylgut strings Perhaps there´s little difference due to technical issues like recording equipment, speakers used and so on. But in real life I (and even the most trusted banjo freak I know) hear a significant difference in sound.  I love my "new" banjo!

Not only did I bring Covid19 (not so bad at the moment, just a positiv test) from Gainsborough back home, but also wonderful memories. We had lots of jams, concerts and a scratchband. The "Chips and Mayo Stringband" were Stuart on fiddle, Olley on mandolin, Ludwig on guitar and vocals, Tim on bass, Paul the dancer and yours truely on banjo. As Ludwig came from Belgium, our band´s name was a must (chips, Belgium, you understand?). To give you an idea what happened at the festival, here are some  videos. ... is a mess. Why is it that let's say heavy metal bands get a trillion clicks on YouTube but this little gem only has 7.921? Dear Crow I guess it's not because they're playing Billy in the Lowground in A, although most people (e.g. me) use to play it in C. I'll let you know when I'm as good on it as he is.

Ein schönes Wochenende ist schon wieder vorbei. Von Freitag bis Sonntag lief das Hannover Hoedown . Es gab viele Jams und Workshops. Zu meiner großen Freude waren nicht nur viele Banjoisten*innen, Kontrabässe, Gitarren und Mandolinen gekommen sondern auch erstaunlich viele Fiddler. In jedem kleinen Jam waren mindestens zwei vorhanden, so dass die Banjos endlich mal wieder ihre Meister*innen gefunden hatten. Es war toll!  Diese besonders schöne und abwechslungsreiche Session fand in der Jurte statt: Gegen Ende des Workshops von Edwin McAllister zum How To in Jams sammelten wir diese Namen von Künstlern, die es wirklich wert sind zu kennen und von denen man über youtube oder dergl. ne Menge lernen kann: Sehr verdienstvoll war der Versuch, Verbindungen der über das ganze Land verstreuten Fans der Oldtime Music zu ermöglichen. Dafür wurde diese Liste mit deutschlandweiten Jams ausgelegt: Hoffentlich wird das Hannover Hoedown zu einer ständigen Einrichtung.

As every year, the Gainsborough festival was a blast. Everyone was enjoying good company after two years of "playing in your closet". As always I had some days in London too. Here are some impressions: Jamming with Rachel Eddie   Jeri Foreman and Ruth Eliza in concert

In 2021 and 2022 the famous FOAOTMAD festival had to be cancelled due to Corona. But finally next weekend we all will meet again in Gainsborough. Unfortunately there are some train lines on strike but I´m confident that I´ll make it to Lincolnshire anyway. There´s great music to be heard and played. You may find the lineup here.

 Hilarious news for my reader (s?) in UK: The Lonesome Ace Stringband will be touring the UK from Jan 13th until Jan 29 2023 . I saw them in Hamburg a few years ago. Unforgettable. And I don´t need to emphasise that Chris Coole is one-of-a-kind. Here´s the link.

Der Film

Nachdem in 2020 das Banjoree aus bekannten Gründen ausgefallen ist und ich im letzten Jahr lieber nicht teilgenommen habe, war es jetzt endlich wieder soweit. Und es war super. Zu meiner großen Freude setzt sich OT immer mehr durch. Und zum ersten Mal wurde auch getanzt:

...aber auch mit Dudelsack? In letzter Zeit sind mir zwei Beweise dafür untergekommen. Einmal Brad Kolodner zusammen mit Tim Cummings, zu hören bei Bandcamp https://birchenmusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-birds-flight und natürlich Bruce Molsky mit Fred Morrison:

Leider wieder vorbei. Von Freitag bis Sonntag (manche haben schon am Donnerstag angefangen) haben wir gespielt und gestimmt *, mehrfach natürlich auch "June Apple" in A mit und ohne Galax-Lick. Aber zu meiner großen Freude auch Tunes, die ich von David Bragger gelernt habe und die Kat auf der Fiddle super hingefetzt hat ( "Alonzo Janes"  und "Forty Weight of Gingerbread"). Gerade diese Tunes im Fiddle/Banjo-Duo zu spielen, bleibt unvergesslich! Es war sooo schön, nach langer Corona-Abstinenz wieder mit anderen zu jammen. Leider wird mir das Wochenende auch wegen einer Begleiterscheinung in Erinnerung bleiben. Entweder kurz vorher oder dort habe ich mir das Virus eingefangen - bisher mit keinen gravierenden Begleiterscheinungen. Mehr so männergrippenartig. Nun sitz ich in Heimisolation und übe mal an "Ed Hailey´s Rebel Raid" rum, damit ich es vielleicht beim Banjoree im August endlich kann.                      ...
